How to Make Traditional Arabic Qahwa at Home

What Is Qahwa?

Qahwa (قهوة) is the traditional Arabic coffee that has been the centrepiece of Saudi hospitality for centuries. Unlike espresso or filter coffee, qahwa is light golden in colour, lightly roasted, and heavily spiced with cardamom, saffron, and cloves. It is traditionally served in small handle-less cups called finjan, accompanied by dates.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons lightly roasted Arabic (green) coffee, coarsely ground
  • 8–10 cardamom pods, lightly crushed
  • A generous pinch of saffron threads
  • 2–3 whole cloves (optional)
  • Dates, to serve

Method

  1. Bring water to the boil in a dallah or saucepan.
  2. Add the ground coffee and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed cardamom, saffron, and cloves. Continue simmering for another 10–15 minutes until fragrant and golden.
  4. Strain through a fine mesh strainer or traditional coffee strainer into a clean dallah or pot.
  5. Serve immediately in small finjan cups alongside a plate of dates.

Tips for the Best Qahwa

The quality of your saffron makes a significant difference. Saudi and Iranian saffron are both excellent choices. For the coffee, look for authentic Arabic green coffee (البن الأخضر) in specialty stores or traditional markets. The light roast is essential — dark-roasted coffee will give a completely different and less authentic result.

Qahwa is best enjoyed slowly, in good company, with dates on the side. It is not just a drink — it is an act of welcome.
