Spanish Latte at Home: Saudi Arabia’s Favourite Café Order

Why the Spanish Latte Dominates Saudi Cafés

Walk into any specialty café in Riyadh, Jeddah, or Dammam and the Spanish Latte — known locally as leche y leche — is almost certainly the top seller. Its secret is the combination of two milks: condensed milk for sweetness and richness at the base, and freshly steamed milk on top. The result is a latte that is sweeter and creamier than standard, without being cloying.

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 2 shots espresso
  • 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 150ml full-fat milk, steamed
  • Ice (for the iced version)

Hot Spanish Latte

  1. Pour the condensed milk into the bottom of your cup.
  2. Pull your espresso shots directly over the condensed milk and stir briefly.
  3. Steam the milk to 60–65°C and pour gently over the espresso mixture.
  4. The condensed milk will swirl beautifully through the drink.

Iced Spanish Latte

  1. Add the condensed milk to the bottom of a tall glass.
  2. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  3. Pour the cold milk over the ice.
  4. Add the freshly pulled espresso over the top — watch the beautiful layers form.
  5. Stir before drinking or leave layered for presentation.

The iced version is particularly popular in Saudi Arabia given the warm climate. Adjust the condensed milk to taste — two tablespoons is standard, but many prefer three for extra sweetness.
