Iced Brown Sugar Oat Latte: Better Than the Coffee Shop
The Drink That Started a Movement
The iced brown sugar oat latte became a phenomenon at Starbucks, but making it at home is surprisingly simple and significantly cheaper. The combination of espresso, brown sugar syrup, cinnamon, and creamy oat milk creates a drink that is warming in flavour yet refreshing when served over ice — ideal for Saudi Arabia’s climate all year round.
Make the Brown Sugar Syrup
Ingredients: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup water, 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
Method: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and cool. Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Assembling the Latte (serves 1)
- 2 shots espresso
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar syrup
- 200ml oat milk (or any plant milk)
- Ice cubes
- A pinch of cinnamon to garnish
- Stir the brown sugar syrup into the hot espresso until combined.
- Fill a tall glass with ice.
- Pour the oat milk over the ice.
- Add the espresso and syrup mixture over the top.
- Dust with cinnamon and serve immediately.
The brown sugar syrup recipe makes enough for about 8 drinks, so you’ll save both money and time by batching it in advance. Oat milk works best here as it has a natural sweetness and creaminess that complements the brown sugar perfectly.
