French Press Coffee: Bold, Rich, and Full-Bodied
The French Press is one of the oldest and most beloved coffee brewing methods in the world. Simple in design yet powerful in result, it produces a bold, rich, and full-bodied cup of coffee that showcases the natural oils and flavors of the bean like no other method can.
What Is a French Press?
A French Press (also called a cafetière or press pot) is a cylindrical coffee brewing device consisting of a glass or stainless steel carafe and a plunger with a metal mesh filter. Unlike paper-filtered methods, the French Press allows the coffee’s natural oils to pass through into your cup, creating that signature rich and robust flavor.
What You Need
- French Press (any size)
- Coarsely ground fresh coffee
- Hot water at 93–96°C (200–205°F)
- Timer
- Digital scale (optional but recommended)
- Stirring spoon
The Perfect French Press Ratio
Use a ratio of 1:12 to 1:15 — coffee to water. For a classic 350ml serving, use approximately 25g of coarsely ground coffee. Adjust to taste — more coffee for stronger brew, less for lighter.
Step-by-Step Brewing Guide
- Preheat the Press: Add hot water to your French Press, swirl it around, and then discard it. This keeps your coffee hot during brewing.
- Add coffee: Add your coarsely ground coffee to the preheated carafe.
- Add water: Start your timer and pour hot water (93–96°C) evenly over all the grounds. Make sure all grounds are fully saturated.
- Stir gently: Give it a gentle stir to ensure all the coffee grounds are fully submerged and extracting evenly.
- Place the lid: Put the lid on with the plunger pulled all the way up. Do NOT press down yet.
- Wait 4 minutes: Let the coffee steep for exactly 4 minutes.
- Press slowly: Apply slow, steady, even pressure to push the plunger all the way down.
- Pour and enjoy: Pour all the coffee out immediately to prevent over-extraction. Serve and enjoy!
Tips for the Best French Press
- Always use a coarse grind — fine grinds lead to over-extraction and a bitter, gritty cup
- Don’t let coffee sit in the Press after plunging — pour it all out immediately
- Clean your French Press thoroughly after each use to prevent stale flavors
- Experiment with steep time — some prefer 3 minutes, others up to 5
- Use high-quality, freshly roasted single-origin beans for the best results
The French Press is the perfect brewing method for those who love a bold, full-flavored cup of coffee. It requires no fancy equipment or precise pouring — just quality coffee, good water, and a little patience. Master it once, and it’ll be your go-to morning ritual.
