Dirty Matcha Latte: When Japan Meets Your Espresso Machine

What Is a Dirty Matcha?

A dirty matcha latte is exactly what it sounds like: a matcha latte “dirtied” with a shot of espresso. The combination sounds unusual but works brilliantly — the grassy, umami depth of matcha pairs surprisingly well with the boldness of espresso, creating a drink with a complex, layered flavour profile and a serious caffeine kick.

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder
  • 2 tablespoons hot water (not boiling — around 75°C)
  • 1 tablespoon simple syrup or honey
  • 200ml oat milk or whole milk, cold
  • 1 shot espresso, freshly pulled
  • Ice cubes

Method

  1. Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl to remove lumps.
  2. Add hot water and whisk in a rapid “W” motion until smooth and frothy — a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) is ideal but a small regular whisk works fine.
  3. Stir in the sweetener.
  4. Fill a tall glass with ice and pour over the cold milk.
  5. Gently pour the matcha mixture over the milk.
  6. Finally, slowly pour the hot espresso shot over the back of a spoon to create a dramatic floating coffee layer on top.

Tips

Quality matcha makes a significant difference. Look for bright green ceremonial-grade matcha — dull or yellowish matcha will taste bitter and flat. Matcha is available in specialty tea shops and health food stores across Saudi Arabia, and increasingly on Amazon.sa. Oat milk enhances the natural sweetness of matcha particularly well.
