Affogato: The Italian Dessert That Saudi Arabia Loves

What Is an Affogato?

Affogato means “drowned” in Italian, and that is exactly what this dessert is — a scoop of gelato or vanilla ice cream “drowned” in a shot of freshly pulled, piping-hot espresso. The contrast between cold and hot, creamy and bitter, sweet and intense makes it one of the most perfectly balanced desserts ever conceived. It takes 60 seconds to make and always impresses.

The Classic Recipe (serves 1)

  • 1–2 scoops vanilla gelato or premium vanilla ice cream
  • 1 double shot of freshly pulled espresso (60ml)
  1. Chill your serving glass or bowl in the freezer for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the ice cream scoops.
  3. Pull the espresso shot and pour it immediately over the ice cream — do not delay or the espresso will cool too much.
  4. Serve immediately and eat right away before the ice cream melts completely.

Saudi-Inspired Affogato Variations

  • Saffron Affogato: Use saffron ice cream instead of vanilla — available in Middle Eastern sweet shops — for a distinctly Gulf-flavoured version.
  • Date Affogato: Add a drizzle of date syrup over the ice cream before adding the espresso.
  • Cardamom Affogato: Stir a pinch of ground cardamom into the espresso shot before pouring.

The affogato is the perfect ending to any Saudi dinner — light enough not to overwhelm after a large meal, impressive enough to serve to guests, and requiring absolutely no baking or preparation time. The only rule: use excellent espresso and excellent ice cream. With two ingredients, there is nowhere to hide.
